Species at Risk Act (SARA) Logbook – All licence holders are asked to submit one SARA logbook at the end of the season. The purpose of the logbook is to record any interactions with SARA species over the course of the 2010 Lobster Season. At
the Fall meeting of the LFA27 Advisory Committee (December 1, 2010) the following was recorded:
SARA log book – Paul Gentile commented that there is a requirement in LFA 27 to provide a log book page at the end of the season regarding any SARA species that are encountered as a by-catch. This sheet should have been received with license conditions, but if not it can be picked up at your local licensing centre. Paul Gentile went on to say that Eastern Nova Scotia in general is not doing well in reporting Sara species, and said that even if you have NO occurrences, you still need to fill the sheet out and send it in. Paul Gentile noted that if there is no data, then information from other areas may have to be applied to this area and that is not necessarily a good thing For additional reference the information included in the condition of license is as follows:C) The licence holder/operator is required to provide information regarding interactions with species at risk (i.e. North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis)) while conducting fishing operations in the SARA monitoring document (SAR (mar2006) available from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The licence holder/operator is required to complete the document pursuant to the instructions contained with the document. D) the SARA monitoring document (SAR (mar2006) must be submitted to a Maritimes Region dockside monitoring company at the end of the fishing season whether or not species at risk are caught. DFO has provided us with a copy of the logbook and a copy of the approved dockside monitoring companies that was valid for the 2010 season. Anyone requiring this service will be able to obtain the services of an approved DMC from the attached list if they have not already done so, or are wanting to compare before completing the task for next season. |
